Sony is planning to reboot the Men in Black series, as they have just hired Chris Bremner to write a brand new script.
At the moment, only Chris Bremner has been brought on to write a story for the next film. There’s no director picked out yet, and no actors have been signed on either.
The first Men in Black movie came out back in 1997, with Barry Sonnenfeld taking charge as a director, starring Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones. The story follows a secret agency that keeps tabs on aliens living here on Earth. People loved it so much that it became a huge hit, making over $580 million around the world.
That success led to two more movies with Smith and Jones. Men in Black II came out in 2002, and then Men in Black 3 followed in 2012. All three films kept audiences coming back to see more alien adventures.
Critics also enjoyed the Men in Black series, with one reviewer calling it a fantastic mix of alien conspiracy stories told funnily, combined with action that felt like a blend of classic cop movies and Ghostbusters.
The review even mentioned that the film was so entertaining, viewers felt a little let down when it ended after just 98 minutes.
In 2019, the franchise planned its reboot with Men in Black: International. This time, Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson took the lead roles. F. Gary Gray directed this version, but neither Will Smith nor Tommy Lee Jones appeared in it. Unfortunately, this reboot didn’t do as well as Sony had hoped when it hit theaters.
Chris Bremner has plenty of experience writing action movies. He wrote both Bad Boys for Life in 2020 and Bad Boys: Ride or Die, which came out last year. Those are the third and fourth movies in the Bad Boys series, which also stars Will Smith alongside Martin Lawrence.
At the moment, Bremner is also working on another Netflix action project called Fast and Loose that has Will Smith involved.
The Men in Black movies are based on comics by Lowell Cunningham that were published by Marvel. With Bremner now working on the script, Sony is clearly hoping to recapture some of that magic from the original films and create something that audiences will remember.
