An explosion was reported near the US embassy in Norway’s capital, Oslo, early Sunday (Mar 8), according to Norwegian police. Authorities confirmed that no injuries have been reported so far, and it remains unclear whether the incident has any connection to the ongoing conflict in West Asia. AFP reported that the blast occurred at around 1 am local time (0000 GMT).
In a statement, the Oslo Police Department said they currently have no information about the cause of the explosion or who might be responsible. Police added that they are in contact with the US embassy regarding the incident and that a significant number of emergency resources were deployed to the area.
The incident comes at a time when US embassies worldwide are on heightened alert following attacks from Iran. Several US diplomatic missions across West Asian countries have already been closed, and Washington has urged American citizens to leave the region as soon as possible.
Oslo police said in a statement that “investigators were examining the scene, while dogs, drones, and helicopters were involved in the search for one or more potential perpetrators. Police view such incidents in public spaces as very serious, and are investigating the case with substantial resources and high priority.”
Police commander Michael Dellemyr told TV2 police, “We’re not connecting it to the conflict. It’s far too early for that.” He also said that there was no indication so far that the incident near the US embassy in Oslo was linked to the ongoing conflict.
