Donald Trump is kicking off the new year by celebrating what he’s calling “good news”, George Clooney and his wife Amal Clooney recently became French citizens.
According to government decrees issued over the weekend and viewed by Entertainment Weekly on Tuesday, the actor, his human rights lawyer wife, and their 8-year-old twins have all been granted French citizenship. The president wasted no time weighing in, posting a lengthy message on Truth Social Wednesday.
“Good News! George and Amal Clooney, two of the worst political prognosticators of all time, have officially become citizens of France which is, sadly, in the midst of a major crime problem because of their absolutely horrendous handling of immigration, much like we had under Sleepy Joe Biden,” Trump wrote.
Trump didn’t stop there. He brought up a 2024 New York Times op-ed written by Clooney, where the actor called for President Biden to step aside in his re-election campaign and make way for then-Vice President Kamala Harris.
Trump continued, “Remember when Clooney, after the now infamous debate, dumped Joe during a fundraiser, only to go onto the side of another stellar candidate, Jamala(K!), who is now fighting it out with the worst governor in the Country, including Tim Waltz, Gavin Newscum, for who is going to lead the Democrats to their future defeat.”
The president then took a shot at Clooney’s acting career, claiming that “Clooney got more publicity for politics than he did for his very few, and totally mediocre movies.”
“He wasn’t a movie star at all, he was just an average guy who complained, constantly, about common sense in politics,” Trump concluded his message. “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
The two-time Oscar winner was born in Kentucky and also holds U.S. citizenship, which French law allows him to keep. In an October interview with Esquire, Clooney opened up about why living in France has been so important for his family especially for his two young children.
“We’re very lucky. You know, we live on a farm in France,” Clooney told the outlet. “I was worried about raising our kids in L.A., in the culture of Hollywood. I felt like they were never going to get a fair shake at life. France they kind of don’t give a s— about fame. I don’t want them to be walking around worried about paparazzi. I don’t want them being compared to somebody else’s famous kids.”
He explained how the lifestyle there has shaped his children’s upbringing in a positive way. “A good portion of my life growing up was on a farm, and as a kid I hated the whole idea of it. But now, for them, it’s like – they’re not on their iPads, you know? They have dinner with grown-ups and have to take their dishes in. They have a much better life.”
For Clooney, the decision to become a French citizen seems rooted in protecting his family from the pressures and scrutiny that come with Hollywood fame. But for Trump, it’s apparently just another opportunity to take a political jab and question Clooney’s career accomplishments along the way.
