In a dramatic escalation, US President Donald Trump has reportedly deployed the US military’s so-called “Doomsday planes” as the conflict in West Asia entered its 10th day. The war intensified after the United States and Israel carried out coordinated military strikes on several high-value targets in Iran on February 28. The attacks reportedly included decapitation strikes against senior leaders of the Islamic Republic, leading to the killing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on the first day of the operation.
Flight-tracking data has recorded several launches of the US Navy’s E-6B Mercury strategic airborne command aircraft since the conflict began, according to a report by the Daily Mail.
Two E-6B Mercury aircraft were spotted flying over the United States on March 2. One of the planes travelled from the Gulf Coast and landed at Naval Air Station Patuxent River in Maryland, while another took off from and later returned to Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska, the Daily Mail reported.
Following those flights, military news outlets have reported additional E-6B aircraft deployments heading across the Atlantic toward the Persian Gulf.
The activity has fueled fears of potential nuclear escalation as tensions in West Asia continue to rise. The situation intensified further after Iran named Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei, the son of the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as the new Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic.
What are Doomsday Planes
The E-6B Mercury aircraft are commonly referred to as “Doomsday planes” because their mission is to ensure that the United States retains the ability to launch nuclear counterstrikes even if ground-based command centers are destroyed. Designed to withstand an electromagnetic pulse (EMP), the aircraft functions as a crucial backup command platform for the US president and military leadership.
Its primary mission, known as TACAMO (“Take Charge And Move Out”), enables the aircraft to communicate with nuclear-armed submarines by deploying a five-mile-long antenna.
The aircraft also has the capability to remotely launch land-based intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) from the air.
