A gunman was shot and killed on Thursday (March 12) after opening fire inside a building at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, leaving two people injured in an incident that sent students fleeing and prompted a campus-wide lockdown.
What Happened
The shooting broke out on Thursday morning inside Constant Hall, home to the university’s College of Business. Old Dominion University quickly issued an emergency alert confirming that the shooter had been neutralized, though further details were not immediately released. The condition of the two injured victims has not been disclosed.
Shortly after noon, the university lifted the alert and notified students and staff that the danger had passed. “The emergency at Constant Hall has ended,” the university said. “There is no longer an active threat to the campus community.”
Eyewitness Account
A junior who was in class inside the building when the shooting began described the terrifying moments as the situation unfolded around him.
“We heard like faint screaming, and we just looked back. We didn’t know what it was, and then we heard the screams getting louder, and then that’s when the alarm went off, and everyone just ran out of the building,” the student told CBS affiliate WTKR-TV.
Response and Aftermath
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives confirmed via X that agents had responded to the scene. In the wake of the incident, Old Dominion University announced that all classes would be suspended for the remainder of the day.
Authorities have not yet released details about the identity of the shooter or a motive for the attack.
