Apple has acquired video editing company MotionVFX, a firm known for creating plugins, templates, and visual-effects tools designed to work with Apple’s Final Cut Pro.
“We are extremely excited to share that MotionVFX is joining the Apple team to continue to empower creators and editors to do their best work,” the startup said on its website Monday. “From the very beginning, we’ve been all about quality, ease of use, and great design. These are also the values that we admire most in Apple’s products, and we’re thrilled to be able to embrace them together.”
Apple declined to comment on the acquisition and did not reveal the financial details of the deal.
Founded in 2009, MotionVFX sells editing tool packages starting at $29 per month for users working inside Final Cut Pro. By bringing the company in-house, Apple will be able to integrate MotionVFX’s technology directly into its editing ecosystem rather than relying on third-party plugins.
The acquisition may also strengthen Apple’s position against competitors such as Adobe and its popular editing software Adobe Premiere Pro. Expanding creative tools could also help Apple grow its subscription offerings as it gradually reduces its dependence on hardware sales.
Apple’s services division — which includes products like iCloud, Apple Music, and bundled app subscriptions — typically delivers higher profit margins compared with hardware devices such as the iPhone.
Earlier this year, Apple launched a new subscription bundle called Creator Studio that packages creative software like Final Cut Pro for $12.99 per month or $129 annually, positioning it as a rival to platforms such as Adobe Creative Cloud.
Historically, Apple has avoided large acquisitions. Instead, the company usually buys smaller firms focused on specific technologies or talent that can be integrated into its existing products and services.
